With the global dynamics in the utilization of natural resources, unprecedented loss of biomass has been realized and Africa is rapidly losing sustainable capacity of natural vegetation because of massive use of fuel wood. Sustainable energy alternatives and user skills are required for Somaliland now than ever before.

Renewable Energy Department/faculty aims to deliver quality education and training focused on the delivery of renewable energy technologies in a local context. It will provide research and monitoring facilities to assess the suitability of different technologies, and help to build customer confidence in renewables through demonstration projects. The growing interest in solar projects has created a demand for qualified engineers and technicians who can design and install systems to maximize available resources and to meet customer expectations. Experienced technicians are needed to deliver after sales maintenance and repair throughout the life of the system

Rationale for Renewable Energy programs

African economies are developing rapidly and need access to affordable energy to sustain this development. While a number of major energy generation infrastructure projects are in development or planning, these take years to complete and can be a major source of conflict between neighboring countries, the demand for energy increases.

Much like the way the continent has benefited in the past twenty years from the development of cellular mobile telephony, micro generation based on solar energy provides an opportunity to skip older inappropriate technologies.

Somaliland is an example of a country with a growing demand for energy, yet with a limited electricity infrastructure as a result of years of under-investment and conflict. With no steam generating power plant, electricity is supplied by numerous diesel generator sets distributed around the country. These operate in small ‘islanded’ systems reducing their efficiency and leading to higher system losses. Total dependence on imported fuel results in Somaliland having some of the highest electricity prices in the world at 1USD per kWh. The impact of this is to suppress domestic consumption and to reduce opportunities for inward investment and business developments requiring energy.

Energy infrastructure & Efficiencies

This is a 6 months program, which is 3 month per semester. It is a certificate course designed to provide students with knowledge and skills needed for entry-level employment opportunities in the energy conservation and efficiency sector. The course gives you a broader understanding of the scientific, economic and political context of the energy industry and infrastructure.

This course will assist you answer complex questions. In this program you will explore: the relationship between conventional energy infrastructure and energy conservation, How to achieve energy security and sustainable growth.

The conventional energy infrastructure for extraction and utilization of conventional energy sources like solar, wind, and hydro. The basic engineering principles that acts as the foundation of the energy sector e.g. heat work and thermodynamics. How infrastructure supports the conventional energy system and its technologies.

Various energy consuming thermal and electrical services common to most of the industry, Energy saving opportunities and their quantitative assessment in the generation equipment, supply lines and application units of these services. Energy auditing techniques and methodology

Renewable energy Management

In this one year diploma course, you are free to choose any two of the following certificate courses, according to your preference and interest.

The students are exposed to the fundamentals of energy conservation, clean energy alternatives, sustainable energy resources and efficiency, Tools for energy analysis and economic development.

In this 6months course the focus will be on the “energy” factor of policy-making for sustainable development. It will explain energy policy and its development towards the use of renewable energy both grid interactive and off grid applications, issues and challenges. This coursework trains you with skills and ability to analyze current and future renewable energy scenarios, formulate solutions/policies, taking into account the social, environmental, regulatory and commercial issues and constraints.
